Visualisation in AGI32 | "The real thing" |
A mixture of luminaires from the Hydrel M9000 and 7000 series is used to uplight and floodlight the exterior of the R&A Clubhouse, Old Course at the prestigious St Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.
Having previously utilised the combination of Holophane's Design Service and Hydrel luminaires for a similar project with great success, Ian White Associates, Stirling, landscape architects for the project, were keen to use Holophane's skill in light control for the installation at St Andrews. Robert Ferguson of Ian White Associates asked Holophane's Lighting Design office to provide AIG32 computer imaging to simulate the illumination of the building for presentation to the client, together with Autocad layouts showing the estimated lighting level contours and aiming angles on the facades.
When the colour and condition of the sandstone on the façade had been determined, High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps were recommended to create a warm and welcoming effect. Due to the location of the building in an area of low district brightness, it was possible to provide the required illumination with fairly low wattage luminaires.
The facades have been lit using recessed in-ground Hydrel M9720 luminaires with 70W HPS lamps and wide floods, whilst the same fittings utilising 50W HPS spots illuminate the pillars and bay window structures. In addition to performance, these double lens Hydrel luminaires were chosen for their low lens temperature and excellent ingress protection capabilities.
Small 50W spot and floodlight versions of the Hydrel 7000 series were selected by the architect in a colour to match the sandstone of the structure. These are mounted discreetly on the building to highlight some of the upper window areas and the front portico overlooking the celebrated 18th green. Larger Hydrel 7100 floodlights, utilising the same wattage but incorporating the Horizontal Flood optic option, provide uplighting on the enclosed balcony below the portico.
To complete the exterior refurbishment, Holophane's Senator 18W PL fluorescent recessed louvred bricklights, also in the special RAL colour to blend with the sandstone, have been incorporated in the walled area adjacent to the new footpaths and steps.
