Holophane Come Full Circle with Marshalls Yard

The newly opened Marshalls Yard retail development in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire has provided the perfect shopping environment for visitors and the environment alike by utilising energy efficient luminaires from Holophane Lighting.

Marshalls Yard was previously occupied by the Marshall’s family Brittania Iron Works which was founded in 1848. The company built steam engines, threshing machines and agricultural machines which were exported all over the world. The site closed in the 1980’s but many features of the site and the original structures were left and the building was classified as listed. As all of the original luminaires discovered in the foundry were manufactured by Holophane, it seemed fitting that Holophane should be involved in the refurbishment.

Developers Prospect Estates and Dransfield Properties obtained the site in 2005 and made good of original structures along with adding extra buildings to blend in with the original design to produce a courtyard style retail site. As the area was listed, strict regulations were in place and architects WCEC called upon Holophane’s expertise to ensure all the lighting within the development was in keeping with the area, as well as ensuring that all lighting within the site would be energy efficient.

Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties, commented “The Marshalls Yard development has brought new life to the area, providing a focal point for local people. In addition to the security of visitors to the centre we have also considered economic and environmental factors, whilst still providing good lighting levels for people to move around safely.”

The most striking illumination in the shopping centre is provided by Holophane’s LED’s, which have been recessed into the ground in groups of six to throw sparkling pinpoints of light on to columns around the perimeter of the site. More LED’s have been used throughout the interior of the centre to highlight the original brickwork around the retail units, whilst LED3 fittings have been employed around walkways providing a stunning runway effect. Designed predominately for architectural feature lighting, pedestrian guidance and landscape illumination, the LED3’s are available in white, blue, red, green and amber to ensure the perfect lighting solution. Their robust construction and the IP68 rating ensures that the LED3 fittings will not deteriorate even under the most extreme weather conditions. Holophanes Senator luminaires have been installed in the landscaped Plaza areas to compliment the LED’s.

Hydrel 9000 luminaires have been mounted on walls encircling the site to give a welcoming, well lit appearance for shoppers. Hydrel accent fixtures can provide a variety of light distributions, whilst the placement and aiming of fixtures will provide a variety of effects, using spot and flood illumination to accent or highlight specific architectural and landscape features. Holophane’s Vistagrande luminaires incorporating 400W Venture metal halide lamps are being used in the car parking areas mounted on 8 metre columns. Segmented optic reflectors are used to produce optimum lighting distribution whilst a choice of asymmetrical or symmetrical distributions ensures maximum efficiency and uniformity. Seattle luminaires have been installed in the service yard and Atlanta fittings incorporate movement detectors in the storage area for added security.

Gavin Ward, Partner of WCEC Architects commented “We have an excellent relationship with Holophane and have used their luminaires on many projects. Their ability to provide the complete light package along with excellent delivery times meant they are always our first choice.”
