Holophane's QSS™ Lanterns Provide a Safer Route to School

The new lighting scheme on the Hinton Estate in Hereford is using the QSS™ street lantern from Holophane Lighting to improve lighting of the roads and pathways on the residential streets. The project was part of a scheme for a 20mph zone to enhance a safer route to St Martins School, which is at the hub of the estate. Supplied by Marwood Lighting Distributors, the lighting has been replaced to provide an improved night time lit environment for the residents which will also help to reduce crime, vandalism and maintenance costs on the estate.

A total of 104 QSS™ luminaires have been installed on roads to replace the original 35W Sox lanterns which provided inadequate illumination. These fittings had been installed before any lighting standards were implemented in the area. The main consideration for the project was to create a 'feel-good' factor for the residents, particularly focusing on safety during the dark winter mornings and evenings. The QSS™ luminaires provide the precise optical performance required to meet the relevant lighting standards on the estate.

QSSTM is the smallest member of the Holophane QSTM street lighting range and combines a contemporary style with a choice of light distributions and lamp types to suit a wide range of applications. Holophanes QSSTM street lantern has been designed specifically for use with electronic gear, photocells and monitoring system components. The unique, IP66 QSSTM luminaire eliminates the problem of premature thermal failure through the innovative Q-CoolTM thermal management system.

The integral Q-CoolTM system houses the control gear in a thermally sealed IP65 compartment, separate from the lamp and optic. Typically, the Q-CoolTM compartment will maintain the temperature of control gear at 10°C below the maximum case temperature, and this brings additional benefits in terms of longer life for the control gear. QSS™ also conforms to night time friendly requirements, while providing precise, controllable light distribution to save energy and reduce light wastage and spillage.

Another issue was the colour rendition of the lamps as, in the event of security cameras being installed in the future, the quality of video footage has to be good as it could be used in any subsequent prosecutions. With this in mind, the QSS™ fittings have been installed with the Philips Lighting's CosmoPolis system, an innovative Lamp and Gear combination that is set to revolutionise urban public lighting with a host of performance advances, outstanding energy and optical efficiency, miniaturisation and increased reliability. Cosmo White lamps were chosen for the project for their ability to generate a warm white light (2600-2850 K) for an improved sense of safety, security and ambience. All of the demands of this residential scheme were met by Holophane's QSS™ with the additional benefits of improved efficiency, lower perceived glare, extended maintenance cycles and ease of installation.
