Holophane shines at Short Wood school

Holophane has supplied a range of exterior and interior luminaires to Short Wood primary school in Telford, helping the school to achieve high energy efficiency with low carbon emissions.

Short Wood has been created from the amalgamation of two existing schools consisting of a newly built school and a refurbished sports complex comprising a sports hall and swimming pool. The two facilities are separated by a lightly used road. The school design was Highly Commended in the SCALA Civic Building of the Year and covers an area of 2,344m2 with 16 class bases and a 32 place nursery. It also includes community facilities for use outside school hours.

The school is designed to produce a third of the UK primary school average of 51kg CO2 per m2 and the lighting has made a major contribution to this.

The outdoor lighting for external circulation areas and car parks was seen as an effective way of creating a common visual theme across both sites to reinforce their unity. To that end, a combination of pole-mounted, wall mounted and bollard fittings using low energy light sources were selected from Holophane’s Denver family.

“The Denver ‘family feel’ was ideal for this project as it enabled us to meet different exterior lighting requirements in each area while retaining a consistent styling across both sites,” explained Telford & Wrekin Borough Council’s Energy Conservation Officer Philip Winborn. We have worked with Holophane in previous projects and been very pleased with the quality of the products and the technical support,” he added.

Holophane luminaires have also been used in the refurbished sports hall, changing rooms and swimming pool; facilities that will be used by the local community outside school hours as well as by pupils.

In the sports hall the original high pressure sodium lighting has been replaced by Prismalume fittings using metal halide light sources. Prismalume’s prismatic glass reflector/refractors create a totally luminous environment by projecting a proportion of the light onto walls and ceilings without shadows. These luminaires also feature a 95% light output ratio to ensure high efficiency.

“The original lighting had a yellow tinge and wasn’t achieving the required lighting levels, whereas the Prismalume fittings have created a much brighter and whiter light with greatly improved lighting levels,” Philip Winborn noted.

In addition, Holophane’s semi-recessed Atlanta fittings have been installed in changing rooms in both the sports hall and swimming pool, an attractive alternative to fully recessed modular fittings with the robust construction required for such areas.
